Western Carolina’s Jade Groen named SoCon player of the week
Junior went 4-0 this week at the No. 1 position
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Western Carolina’s Jade Groen has been named the Southern Conference women’s tennis player of the week for all matches played from Jan. 28 – Feb. 3, the conference announced on Tuesday. The award is selected by the league office.
Groen led the Catamounts to a 5-1 win at Davidson on Saturday, Feb. 1, defeating Charlotte Calderwood at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 6-3. In doubles, the junior partnered with Madison Schwarz to defeat Kavya Patel and Daniela Porgues, 6-2, claiming the first doubles match for Western Carolina.
On Monday, Feb. 3, Groen won in straight sets again at the No. 1 position with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Elodie Baechler of Tusculum. In doubles, the Zoetermeer, Netherlands, native paired with Schwarz again and beat Baechler and Ylva Frafjord Landa 6-2. The Catamounts won the match 6-0.
Western Carolina (3-2) will welcome Appalachian State on Saturday, Feb. 8, before hosting Presbyterian on Sunday, Feb. 9.
