Saturday's softball roundup

Mercer 2, Furman 0

Mercer 16, Furman 0

MER - Visiting Mercer plated lone runs in the first and fifth innings to tough out a 2-0 win in the opener, and then went buck wild in the scoring column on the way to a series-clinching 16-0 rout in the nightcap, as the Bears registered a weekend-opening doubleheader sweep of Furman to reach the 30-win plateau for the first time in seven years.

FUR - Mercer's pitching staff tossed back-to-back shutouts and the Bears exploded for 16 runs in game two en route to a 2-0, 16-0 doubleheader sweep of Furman on Senior Day Saturday at Pepsi Stadium.

Samford 4, Wofford 3

SAM - The Samford softball team was home this weekend for its season finale series against Wofford. The Bulldogs honored six seniors prior to the game yesterday but it was postponed due to weather and continued today. Samford was able to pull out the 4-3 victory to finish their regular season with a 31-21 record overall and a 12-7 mark in Southern Conference play.

WOF - Wofford softball's opening game of a weekend series at Samford was continued Saturday, May 3, and resulted in a Wofford 4-3 loss to the Samford Bulldogs. The final two games of the series were cancelled due to bad weather.

Chattanooga 7, ETSU 2

UTC - The rain held off long enough Saturday in Johnson City to play the game, but the Chattanooga softball team brought a little of its own, raining down four home runs to beat ETSU 7-2 in Southern Conference action.

ETSU - East Tennessee State University softball dropped Saturday evening's tilt 7-2 to Chattanooga.
Senior Sara Muir had one of her best days of the season, hitting a solo homer and an RBI double that provided all of the Bucs' offense on the day. It's the first time this year that Muir has had two extra-base hits in the same game.
