Friday's softball roundup
SAM - The Samford softball team returned to Southern Conference play today as they hosted ETSU in game one of a three-game series. It was all Bulldogs from the jump as they got out to an early lead and never were really threatened as they came away with an 11-0 victory. Samford moves to 24-15 on the season and remains atop the conference with a 6-1 league record.
ETSU - East Tennessee State University softball was run-ruled 11-0 by Samford to open the series on Friday.
The Bulldogs got off to a quick start with two runs in the first inning on a two-run double. After a clean second inning for the ETSU pitching staff, the Samford bats raked in the third. A two run single was followed by a bases-loaded walk and passed ball. Another two-RBI single came immediately after to give the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead.
UNCG - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team defeated The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Furman on Friday night, 3-1, at Pepsi Stadium extending its win streak to five.
UNCG improves to 28-10 overall and 5-2 in the SoCon and Furman falls to 13-23 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
FUR - Three UNC Greensboro pitchers combined to strand 11 Paladins on base as the Spartans held off Furman, 3-1, in the opening game of a three-game Southern Conference softball series Friday evening at Pepsi Stadium.
Chattanooga 4, Western Carolina 2
UTC - The Chattanooga Mocs softball team used back-to-back two-run innings to claim a 4-2 win over Western Carolina in Southern Conference action Friday night at Frost Stadium.
Lexi Cooley hit a double off the fend in right field in the fourth and Presley Williamson cleared it in the fifth to give Chattanooga the win. The Mocs improve to 26-9 on the year and 5-1 in league play. Western Carolina drops to 18-20 overall and 2-5 against the SoCon.
WCU - Western Carolina softball pulled the curtain back on a weekend series with Chattanooga on Friday night as the Catamounts rallied in the seventh inning with a home run before the host Mocs held on for the 4-2 series-opening victory at Frost Stadium. Junior Tate Stewman and senior Tessa Juett both homered in Friday's defeat.
WOF - In the opening game of a weekend series against Mercer, the Wofford softball team had an 8-1 win on Friday afternoon at Hope Field. The Terriers (21-15, 3-4 SoCon) scored four runs in the first inning and added four runs in the third inning to defeat the Bears (19-19, 1-5 SoCon).
MER - Wofford rallied for four runs in both the first and third innings behind a complete game effort from Margaret Axelson to fuel the Terriers to an 8-1 victory over Mercer on Friday evening at Hope Field.
