Saturday's softball roundup
WOF - The Wofford softball team (30-18, 11-4 SoCon) took the first two games of a three game weekend series against ETSU (15-32, 4-12 SoCon) on Saturday, April 26. The first game saw Margaret Axelson pitch a complete game shutout as Wofford coasted to a 4-0 win. Game two saw some late heroics by Rivers Sampson as Wofford won in walk-off fashion 3-1.
ETSU - East Tennessee State University softball lost both games of its doubleheader, 4-0 and 3-1 (8 innings) at Wofford on Saturday.
Senior Riley Nayadley had four of ETSU's 13 hits between the two games, and two of the four in the early afternoon contest. Sophomore Makayla Veglia added three hits for ETSU in the second game.
Western Carolina 5, Furman 4 (9 innings)
FUR - First baseman Kiley Perry belted a pair of three-run homers to power Furman to a 4-5, 7-6 doubleheader split versus Western Carolina in Southern Conference softball action Saturday afternoon at the Catamount Softball Complex.
WCU - Western Carolina softball began its final home weekend of 2025 against chromatic rival Furman using a walk-off in the bottom of the ninth to earn the 5-4 extra-inning win in the opener before dropping a tight 7-6 decision in game two at the Catamount Softball Complex.
UTC - The Chattanooga softball team swept its Saturday Senior Day double header with Samford to move into first place in the Southern Conference standings.
The Mocs improve to 35-12 overall and 12-4 in SoCon action, half a game up on UNCG (12-5) who split its double header at Mercer. The Spartans and Bulldogs entered the day tied for the conference lead, half a game up on Chattanooga. The Mocs the opening game 4-3 on a walk-off single and took the second game 1-0.
SAM - The Samford softball team hit the road in Southern Conference play today as they started one of the biggest series of their season as they faced Chattanooga. The Bulldogs entered tied atop the SoCon with the Mocs sitting one game back, but Samford fell 4-3 in game one before being shutout 1-0 in game two. Samford's record drops to 30-20 while Chattanooga moves to 35-12 on the year.
UNCG - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team split its Saturday doubleheader with Mercer at Sikes Field, taking game one 5-2 and then falling 8-0 in five innings.
UNCG is 36-15 overall and 12-5 in The Southern Conference (SoCon), while Mercer is 27-23 overall and 7-9 in the conference.
MER - Visiting UNC Greensboro used a 2-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to fuel a 5-2 win in Saturday's opener, but Mercer scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to fuel an 8-0 mercy-rule win in the nightcap and forge a doubleheader split with the Southern Conference leading Spartans on Saturday at Sikes Field.
