Thursday's Men's Tennis Roundup
Mercer 4, ETSU 3
Mercer yielded just four games in sweeping through doubles competition, and then picked up three victories in singles play, including tight triumphs on Court Nos. 1 and 2, to take down 9-time defending Southern Conference champion East Tennessee State, 4-3, on Thursday at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. The victory gave Mercer (7-6, 2-0 SoCon) a 2-0 start in conference play for the third-straight season, while also marking MU's second-straight home win in the series with the Bucs as well. It was just the third league loss in the last 11 seasons for East Tennessee State (8-6, 2-1) who fell to 65-3 against league rivals since the 2014 campaign.
The ETSU men's tennis team dropped a close 4-3 decision on the road at Mercer on Thursday afternoon. Thursday's loss to the Bears moves ETSU's record to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in SoCon action. Mercer began Thursday's match by winning all three doubles tilts by scores of 6-3, 6-0 and 6-1. The Bears tallied the first win in singles as well but three straight wins by the Bucs from Carlos Gonzales, Pedro Cressoni and Francisco Lamas put the Bucs in front, 3-2. Suddenly trailing, Mercer responded to take the matches in the No. 1 and 2 flights to notch its first win over the Bucs since 2023.
Wofford 5, Ouachita Baptist 2
The Wofford College men's tennis team defeated Ouachita by a 5-2 score on Thursday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center for the final non-conference match of the season. The Tigers won the double point, but the Terriers answered by winning five of the six singles matches for the win. Ouachita's #1 doubles team, ranked fifth in NCAA Division II, won by a 6-2 score. The Tigers secured the point with a 6-4 win at the #3 position. The #2 position was left unfinished, with Hugo Rask and Ian Rasheed trailing 5-4.
UNCG 4, North Carolina A&T 3
The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team earned a 4-3 victory over crosstown foe North Carolina A&T (NCAT) in a non-conference dual on Thursday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
