Furman athletes honored this week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –  Furman’s Kaylie Armitage and Dylan Schubert have been named the Southern Conference women’s and men’s indoor track athlete of the week, respectively, the conference office announced Wednesday.

Selections were made by panels of the league’s track and field coaches and included all competition from Dec. 6-10. There were no women’s or men’s indoor field nominees this week.

On Dec. 7, Armitage competed in the 3,000m at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at Boston University where she placed 32nd overall, winning her heat, with a time of 9:14.06. The junior from Exeter, Rhode Island, is now ranked 24 in the NCAA and this performance placed her in the conference lead to begin the season.

Competing at the same meet, Schubert placed fifth overall in the 5,000m with a time of 13:17.89. The Loveland, Colorado, native set a new program record, besting the record he set last season. Schubert’s performance placed him fifth in the NCAA and now leads the SoCon in the early standings.
