UNCG’s Lewis named SoCon men’s golfer of the week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Jake Lewis has been selected as the Southern Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for all competition from March 12-18. The selection is made by the league office.
 
Lewis finished as the runner-up, his best collegiate finish, at the Sea Palms Invitational in Sea Island, Georgia, which wrapped play on Saturday. The freshman posted rounds of 63-70-71 for a tournament score of 204 (-9). Lewis’s 63 in the first round was a career best. The native of Cary, North Carolina, was tied for 10th place in the Johnnie-O at Sea Island at even-par, which wrapped play Tuesday. Lewis carded rounds of 72-68 in the event, which was shortened to two rounds due to inclement weather.

UNCG won the Sea Island Palms Invitational, which featured 20 teams and 120 golfers, by 16 strokes with a tournament score of 831. The Spartans shot 268 in the first round, 279 in the second round and 284 in the final round. UNCG finished fourth in the Johnnie-O at Sea Island in a field of 13 teams and 80 golfers, with a tournament score of 562. The Spartans, who defeated 50th-ranked Kansas, shot 285 in the first round and 277 in the final round.

The Spartans will play their next tournament at the Maridoe Collegiate in Carrollton, Texas, on March 31-April 1.
