Saturday's men's basketball roundup

Western Carolina 80, The Citadel 78 (OT)

WCU - Western Carolina rallied from a four-point deficit in Saturday afternoon's overtime session against The Citadel as senior Bernard Pelote and Marcus Kell combined for the game's final six points as the Catamounts earned the tough 80-78 road victory in Southern Conference men's basketball action over the Bulldogs from the snow-covered South Carolina Lowcountry.

After neither team was able to claim victory in 40 minutes of action, the Bulldogs skirted to a pair of four-point leads at 76-72 and 78-74 on a pair of jumpers and two free throws midway through the extra session. Pelote sank his fourth 3-pointer of the day as part of scoring five of his game-high 24 points and Kell converted one of two free throws inside the final 10 seconds as the Catamounts outlasted the Cadets for the win.

CIT - The Citadel basketball team erased a nine-point halftime deficit to force overtime before falling in the extra session as the Western Carolina University Catamounts won 80-78 on Saturday afternoon.
Brody Fox led the Bulldogs with 19 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, including tying the game at the free-throw line with seven seconds remaining. Christian Moore set a new career highs in both points (18) and rebounds (eight).

UNCG 60, VMI 57

UNCG - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team came from behind for a gritty 60-57 victory over VMI on Saturday afternoon at Cameron Hall in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action.

With the win, the Spartans snapped VMI's three-game win streak. It also extended UNCG's win streak over the Keydets in regular season play to five.

VMI - The VMI basketball team fought valiantly against one of the top teams in the league in UNCG but came up just short as the Spartans escaped Cameron Hall with a 60-57 win over the Keydets Saturday afternoon in Lexington.

With the loss, the Keydets fall to 9-12, 3-5 on the season while UNCG improves to 13-8, 6-2 in Southern Conference play.

Chattanooga 71, ETSU 63

UTC - The Chattanooga Mocs men's basketball team made it five-straight victories inside Johnson City's Freedom Hall after a strong second-half effort and gutsy performance led to a 71-63 win over Southern Conference rival ETSU on Saturday afternoon.

In a back-and-forth, physical rivalry game, Chattanooga (13-8, 5-3 SoCon) responded from an early 12-point deficit (22-10, 8:23) by holding ETSU (12-9, 5-3 SoCon) scoreless over the final four minutes of the half to grab a 28-27 lead into the break. UTC used an efficient shooting performance and tough defensive presence in the second half to never relinquish the lead and come away with the huge conference win.

ETSU -  It was an inopportune time for ETSU men's basketball to have a cold shooting performance.

Playing a longstanding in-state rival and with a crowd over 5,000 fans on hand inside Freedom Hall, the Buccaneers had a rare off-shooting night on their home floor. ETSU shot 33 percent from the field and never could recover from a 12-0 Chattanooga run that spanned from the end of the first half over into the second, as the Mocs defeated the Bucs 71-63 on Saturday in Southern Conference play.

Furman 79, Mercer 74

FUR -  Nick Anderson poured in a team-high 18 points and PJay Smith Jr. drained a pair of free throws with 2.8 seconds left as Furman earned its seventh true road victory of the season with a 79-74 triumph over Mercer on Saturday afternoon at Hawkins Arena in Macon, Ga.

The Paladins connected on their final four field goal attempts, and after Furman missed a pair of front ends on one-and-one attempts in the final minute, Smith followed two missed triples by the Bears with a pair of free throws with under three seconds remaining to secure the win.

MER - Ahmad Robinson scored a game high 24 points, but Mercer ended up on the short end of a 79-74 game against Furman Saturday evening inside Hawkins Arena.
Trailing 77-74 with 15 seconds to play, Mercer (10-11, 3-5) had two good looks at a potential game-tying three-pointer but neither shot found its way in the basket as Furman (16-5, 4-4) held on for the win.

Samford 77, Wofford 61

SAM - The Samford men's basketball team hosted Wofford tonight at the Pete Hanna Center in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs dominated the game wire-to-wire, capturing a 77-61 victory that takes their record to 17-4 overall and 7-1 in SoCon play while Wofford falls to 11-10 on the year and 5-3 in league play.
Samford set the tone of the game immediately with their effort defensively. They didn't rely on forced turnovers like they have at times throughout the season but locked down the Terriers in the half-court.

WOF - The Wofford men's basketball team (11-10, 5-3) fell on the road to the Samford Bulldogs (17-4, 7-1) 77-61 at the Pete Hanna Center on Saturday evening.

The Terriers were outshot tonight, as Samford shot 52.8 percent (28-53) from the field and hit 11 three-pointers at a 50 percent clip. Wofford finished the game shooting 44 percent (22-50) and made six deep balls.
