Wednesday's Baseball Roundup

Western Carolina 10, Michigan State 7
Western Carolina baseball scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning without the benefit of a base hit as the Catamounts rallied past Michigan State 10-7 on Wednesday evening in nonconference action at Fluor Field. The win was WCU's third against the Big Ten Conference this season, coupled with the 2-1 series win over Maryland. Trailing by three, 7-4, entering the final frame, Brayden Corn drew the first of four consecutive freebies with a lead-off walk.

Mercer 1, Alabama State 0
The Mercer baseball team flexed their muscles on the mound by tossing their first shutout since April 24th of last season, taking down Alabama State by a score of 1-0 on Wednesday night. Cade Cosper (1-0) had a career night on the hill, tossing a career-high 5 – 1/3 innings of shutout baseball with only two hits to earn his first collegiate win. Jeb JohnsonBryce Hawkins and Collin Ewaldsen backed Cosper with strong efforts before Terry Busse slammed the door in the ninth for his third save of the season. As a staff, the Bears combined for eight strikeouts and did not allow a walk while surrendering only two hits. Just one Hornet reached third base on the night.   

Elon 12, UNCG 2
The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell 12-2 while hosting the Elon Phoenix for a non-conference contest on Wednesday night at UNCG Baseball Stadium. Elon's Ryan Sprock put the Phoenix on the board first three at-bats into the game when he pulled a no-doubt solo home run over the wall in left. Vince Fattore then singled up the middle to score another pair of runs later in the inning to make it 3-0 Elon.

South Carolina 9, The Citadel 1

  • South Carolina scored two in the first inning from a two-run home run from Ethan Petry.
  • Evan Stone gave the Gamecocks a three-run lead in the third with a home run to make it 3-0.
  • The Bulldogs got on the board from a SAC-fly RBI from TJ Anderson in the bottom of the third, scoring Noah Cadiz to make it 3-1.
  • The Gamecocks added two more in the fourth inning to make it 5-1.
  • South Carolina extended their lead to 9-1 by scoring three runs in the eighth and one in the ninth.
