SoCon baseball player, pitcher of the week announced

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – VMI outfielder Boston Torres and Samford starting pitcher Mason Blasche have been named the Southern Conference player and pitcher of the week, respectively, for all competition from March 24-30. The awards are selected by the league office.

Torres hit .500 this week, going 8-for-16 over four games, including a midweek 10-8 setback against George Washington, and a SoCon series loss to UNC Greensboro. The Altavista, Virginia, native went 1-for-2 with an RBI against George Washington. In game one of the weekend series, Torres hit a solo home run in a 9-7 Spartan victory. On Saturday, March 29, the outfielder hit another home run, logged a double and had three RBIs in a 13-12 UNCG victory. In the final game of the series, the sophomore hit a game-tying three-run home run in the fifth inning, setting the stage for a Keydets 8-6 series-finale victory.

VMI (17-11, 3-3 SoCon) will host Longwood on Tuesday, then travel to Norfolk State on Wednesday. The Keydets return home on Friday for their weekend series with Mercer.

Blasche started for the Bulldogs on Sunday in the series finale against Creighton. The freshman pitched seven innings, striking out seven, and allowing no runs on three hits to earn the win. The Hoover, Alabama, product held opposing batters to a .125 average in a 5-0 Samford victory.

Samford (14-14, 1-2 SoCon) will travel to Alabama for a Tuesday matchup, then to Wofford for its weekend series beginning Friday.
